Museum of Sculpture

Introduction:

Hualien is located in east Taiwan that has the majestic mountain line and coast, moderate climate, agricultural and fishery products. This city also has rich natural mineral, especially the world-class marble and jade. Therefore it is called “The Birthplace Of Stone.” The excellent natural conditions develop the unique humane and sculpture art culture.

In 1995, some domestic and foreign artists gathered at Yanliao coast spontaneously to hold the 1st “Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival”, this activity guided Hualien to become an important place worldwide for studying stone sculpture, and it also got the official recognition. Hualien County Government and Hualien County Cultural Affairs Bureau held the 2ne festival in 1997 and it made stone sculpture art become Well-known. After this, the festival is held biennially and has accumulated significant number of creative works.

With the effort of both public and private sectors, Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival has been quite renowned. With the great expectations of the local residents that they hoped can have a place to conserve this particular culture, “Hualien County Stone Sculpture Museum” was be established in 2001 and became the first stone sculpture museum in Taiwan. It provided the open place to show the stone sculpture and stone-art exhibitions for educational purposes.

First Floor The Lobby Exhibition Area Exhibition projects are museum collections and creative works of well-known stone sculptures and multi-materials artists.
The First Planning Exhibition Area This exhibition area plays as a communicating platform where we periodically invite stone art organizations and collections to exhibit their sculptures and live-applied works.
The Second Planning Exhibition Area In this area, we invite artists to exhibit their works and provide DIY programs enabling people to experience the art creating fun.
The Perennial Exhibition Area The theme of exhibitions here is about artists that having profound effect on the development of Hualien stone sculpture.
The Multi-functional Exhibition Room It can offer people art education classes and videos to understand the museum’s history. The Multi-functional Exhibition Room
Collection Area The area is segregated into the collection room and the registration and preparatory area. The collection room is the treasury of the Stone Sculpture Museum. It houses all the traditional stone sculptures acquired by the Museum either through purchase or donation since the opening of the museum. The pieces include rare Buddha sculptures and ancient building carvings, as well as folk sculptures like stone lions, stone drums, stone horses, stone tigers, stone mortars and stone scales. In addition, the collection also includes local and overseas modern pieces submitted through the International Stone Sculpture Festival competitions. There are more than 500 items in total. The registration and preparatory area serves as a preparation area for exhibitions. It includes a storage room, photography room and work zones for personnel to conduct inventory checks and make records.
Water Stage and Outdoor Stone Sculpture Park An outdoor exhibition area where can enjoy majestic sculpture works with the graceful pond, beautiful scene and cyan Pacific Ocean.

    From Northern Taiwan
    Take National Highway 5 through Xueshan Tunnel→go along Su-hua Highway→reach Hualien→ go straight on Provincial Highway 9 (Fuqian Road→take a left onto Minquan 9th Street→take a left onto Minquan Road→proceed for around two minutes and you will arrive


    From Southern Taiwan
    Take Provincial Highway 1 (Ping-E Highway→turn right at Fenggang in Pingdong County onto Provincial Highway 9→follow the highway to Hualien→go straight on Fuqian Road→turn left onto Minquan 9th Street→take a left onto Minquan Road→ proceed straight for two minutes or so and you will arrive.


  • By bus

    From Hualien New Station, take a Hualien Bus Co. Qixing line or Airport Line bus and alight at Hualien County Stone Sculptural Museum
