It has been 25 years since “Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival” was organized by Hualien County in 1995 which has been one of the longest and uninterrupted art activities in Taiwan at present and has built up the word-of-mouth brand of high-quality art in Eastern Taiwan for a long time. The theme of the 12th anniversary “Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival” is set as “Stone Mambo”, which keynote is to base on the artist's creative process as the main concept to take "movement" as the main axis to run through the connotation of various activity connotations. Stone sculpture is a silent art after it is accomplished, but in the creation processes while the artist goes around a huge stone to wave his various tools, it seems just like a performance of graceful dance. After the wonderful Mambo dances are over one by one, what is left is an uncanny workmanship.

The exhibitions are classified into three major themed exhibition areas, including “Convergence between Stones”, “In Unison with Textures” and “Whirling Waves of the East” which would provide nearly 50 stonework masterpieces in totality. The main exhibition area “Convergence between Stones”will exhibit the stone works cut by internationally and domestically famous masters, such as Cynthia Sah, Nicolas Bertoux, Ju Ming, Chi-Man Lai, Chang Tzu-Lung, Wang Hsiu-Chi, Hsu Li-Hsien and so on, while the “In Unison with Textures” exhibition area shows contemporary sculptures created by some other artists, such as Yayoi Kusama , Florentijn Hofman , Lee UFan , HUNG Yi , Pu Hao-Ming , Jun T Lai . and so forth who use different styles and materials. The exhibitions area in “Convergence between Stones”and “In Unison with Textures” areas symbolize all the exhibits and the participating artists who come from all over the world are gathering in Hualien to perform the Mambo dance in the festival together.

The exhibition area “Whirling Waves of the East” sets up a projection wall with interactive story and invites local sculptors, such as Liu Shun-Tien, Chiu Chuang-Yong, Tsai Wen-Ching, Chuang Ting-Kuen, Huang Ching-Huei and so forth to display their stone works. Through the sculptors’ scrutiny for the rhythm and change of the natural scenery in Hualien and their humanistic features with both innovation and tradition, the charms of the stonework have been extended from the local to the international. This area also displays the domestic and foreign stone sculpture models selected in this outdoor creation camp. It means to let the audience feel the connection and shock between indoor works and on-the-spot large-scale outdoor creations in the special exhibition. Meanwhile, through the video records of the sculptors’ studio and creating, it is managed to let the public feel the atmosphere of stone carving creation work.

In addition, the exhibit this time also brings in technology to show the presentation of stone carving art. We also take the map of Taiwan as the field concept. The audience can scan the sensor points on the spot to see the pictures and information of the public art surrounding stone carvings by way of using the mobile phone to operate the interactive method of AR for augmented reality.
