Traditional Sediq Rattan Plaiting Craft

Artistic Quality: Although the pattern and technique of the craftwork are simple and rustic, the rattan craft, which preserves the traditional techniques, has been passed down from the tribal seniors.
Uniqueness: Craftsman Zheng-Chang Hu’s works include Beluwui, used for packing goods in general and Lawa, used for carrying quarries. The top of the Beluwui is weaved by folding back to increase its strength and the clasps where they join the strap and headband are finished quite beautifully.
Local Characteristic: As the craftsmen don’t interact much with the outside world, the works still maintain the traditional Sediq Tawsay techniques and style, which are different from the Truku techniques and style. Moreover, the rattans reflect the Sediq culture of men doing craftwork.
Preservation Organization: Hualien County Zhuoxi Township Shanli Community Development Association has a great relationship with the craftsmen and is the platform for craftsmen to show their works to the outside world.
