Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival

Sculpture Symposium

Invite you to explore the stone sculpture art with us!

Hualien County Cultural Bureau
October 24 (Sat) to November 22 (Sat), 2020 9:00-17:00

Another 3 years have finally passed before we are ready to usher the 12th Hualien International Stone Sculpture Symposium in 2020. Since Dec 2019 through Feb 2020, 238 registrations of artworks were received and they remarkably came from 52 nations across the 5 continents. This number far exceeds that of the previous year of 2019.
This one-month (Oct 24 to Nov 22) event for year 2020 will be held at the Cultural Bureau Park. However, due to the raging global pandemic of Covid-19, inviting foreign sculptors to Taiwan has unfortunately come to a suspension. Therefore, for the year 2020 the event will primarily focus on the eight selected domestic artists, along with other well-known Taiwanese artists to participate.
We heartily invite all those interested to come and cheer for the sculptors, as well as explore the beauty of store sculpture.

The Touch of the Mountain

The Touch of the Mountain

Hualien is located in eastern Taiwan. In its jurisdiction, there is Taroko Gorge with towering mountains and verdant mountains, while the East Rift Valley lies between the Coast Mountains and the Central Mountain Range. As experiencing the feeling of everyday life as spiritual practice when watching clouds and mountains every day, I am moved and my creativity is inspired, so I record the beauty of the moment.

Chasing the Light

Chasing the Light

Inspiration of Chinese Fairy Tale " Kua Fu Ran after the Sun" This article is characterized by a permutation and combination of different structural forms . The sun emitting shining light is imaged by a cone carved with radial and symmetrical shape. Embedded in the cone is a moving cylindrical body piercing through the center of the sun, symbolizing that people are eager for getting some heat to warm their heart, running after the light with a firm and persistent spirit. It seems that the scene in the Chinese fairy tale Kua Fu Ran after the Sun appears again.

Time and Space Memory

Time and Space Memory

Piled-up years usually turn to be memories. While a culture carries the dialogue between people and objects, it penetrates time and space to come to us. The author makes connected round bodies to symbolize condensed memories, while using cubes to represent the dimensions of space which leave bright marks in the long river of time.

Space Writing

Space Writing

The conception of the work comes from a calligraphy technique: hollow stroking, which is like a certain technique of stone carvings, such as virtuality and reality, movement, and stillness. Such a technique just coordinates with the theme “Stone Mambo” of the 2020 Hualien International Stone Sculpture Festival.

When the Spring Flowers Blossoming

When the Spring Flowers Blossoming

With geometric shapes and texture levels, the stonework takes in the scene of blooming flowers. In the outdoor field, it produces various light and shadow dynamics which is like another show co-acted by the audience and the work. What they play is a show interlacing between virtuality and reality, moving in the wind like flowers blooming with a rush in the warm spring.

My pledges with this enchanting

My pledges with this enchanting

The real reason why Hualien has been named as the meaning of “turning billows” might be its appealing soils! Through the metaphors of “paperclip” and “paper” to symbolize “the commitment with Hualien”, the stonework establishes the charming story in the back area of Taiwan.

The Sceneries Face Towards the Sea

The Sceneries Face Towards the Sea

The work is based on black granite to build up an ornamental landscape of mind and vision. The various textures carved on both sides symbolize diverse geological formations; the white marble is shaped along the edge of the scene frame and its form and appearance are like a magnificent spectacle of overlapping mountains and seas along the coast, while the tiny ripples slowly fade away at the corners.
