睽違三年的「花蓮國際石雕藝術季」即將於明(109)年9月27日至10月27日舉辦。花蓮縣自1995年起辦理「花蓮國際石雕藝術季」迄今已逾24年歷史，明年即將屆滿25年，是臺灣目前舉辦歷史不間斷、最悠久的藝術創作活動之一，長久打造東臺灣優質藝文口碑品牌，歷年不僅為花蓮累積百餘件戶外大型石雕佳作，提供在地鄉親及遊客美好的文化享受，亦使花蓮石雕藝術揚名國際，成為地方的重要藝術資產。

第12屆「花蓮國際石雕藝術季」主題訂為「石動曼波」(Stone Mambo)，主旨是以藝術家創作過程為主體概念，以「動」為主軸來貫穿各項活動內涵。石雕，印象中雖是靜謐的藝術，但是藝術家們創作的過程，卻是圍繞著一顆巨大的石頭，揮舞手中各式工具，如同一場曼妙舞姿的演出，終將巨石轉化為撼動人心的藝術品，一場場精彩的曼波之舞結束後，留下的則是一件件鬼斧神工的藝術作品。

「石雕」雖作為傳統藝術，但傳統並不代表落後，透過經典價值的不斷闡述與詮釋，一樣能歷久彌新。我們認為，「創新」並非徒具形式或標新立異，而是必須建立在美學的秩序內涵中，跟隨時代的脈動與時俱進，方能彰顯這門藝術在當代的定位與意義，「花蓮國際石雕藝術季」所扮演的角色，正是作為花蓮與世界之間的聯結平台，不僅為世界各地優秀的石雕藝術家打造出一個優質的創作空間，也使世界看到花蓮的美麗，並將世界石雕藝術的精華收藏於花蓮，讓民眾得以認識、欣賞它的內涵。

「2020花蓮國際石雕藝術季」戶外創作營，預計徵集國、內外石雕藝術家共16位，於明(109)年9月27日至10月27日來到花蓮駐地創作一個月，透過技藝切磋、相互交流，激盪出創作火花，為「石雕的故鄉」─花蓮再創藝術新價值。

It has been three years since the last “Hualien International Stone Scultpure Symposium” was held. But it will be organized again from Sept. 27 to Oct. 27, 2020. It has been 24 years since the symposium was organized by Hualien County in 1995, and it will be the 25th anniversary next year. The event is one of the constant and longest-running art-creation activities currently held in Taiwan. It has built up a word-of-mouth brand of high-quality cultural and artistic activities in Eastern Taiwan. Over the years, the events have not only accumulated more than 100 pieces of outdoor large-scale stone carving masterpieces, providing local residents and travelers with wonderful cultural enjoyment, but also made Hualien stone carving art famous internationally and became an important artistic asset of the locality.    

The theme of the 12th “Hualien International Stone Sculpture Symposium” is settled on “Stone Mambo”, which keynote is based on the subject concept of the artists’ creative process, and capitalizes on the axis of “moving” to penetrate the connotation of various activities. In common impression, stone sculpture is a quiet art, but the process of artists’ creation always surrounds a huge stone, and while the sculptors wield various instruments to carve, it seems that they are performing a graceful dance, eventually the huge stone would become awesome artworks; after a series of such dramatic mambos, the superlative craftsmanship have been left one by one.     

Stone sculpture is a kind of traditional art, but it doesn’t mean it is out of date. We don’t think that “innovation” is only a form to no avail or just eccentric and unconditional but must be based on aesthetic order connotation and catch up with the pulse of the times so as to highlight the contemporary position and meaning of stone sculpture. Hualien International Stone Sculpture Symposium has played the role to be a connection platform between Hualien and the world which not only create a quality space of creation for excellent stone sculptors all over the world but also make the scenery in Hualien caught by the world, and collect many global masterpieces of stone sculptures in Hualien so as to let the residents understand and appreciate the connotation.      

The 12th “Hualien International Stone Sculpture Symposium will draft 16 domestic and foreign stone sculptors to go to Hualien to create in residency from Sept. 27 to Oct. 27, 2020. Through studying and learning by mutual discussion and exchanges, the artists would stir up lots of creative ideas and recreate new value of arts for “the homeland of stone sculpture”---Hualien.
