Funan Brick Kiln is a traditional brick factory supplying red bricks to south Hualien and north Taitung.
Due to changes in construction methods in recent years, as well as limitations on mining of brick material,
the once bustling Funan Brick Kiln ceased production and the industry gradually dwindled.
Funan Brick Kiln is most famous for its traditional "Eight Trigram Kiln". Eight Trigram Kilns are almost oval in shape and the name came from the octagonal shape of the roof.
The Eight Trigram Kiln was invented by a German named Friedrich Hoffman in 1865, hence its name in English "Hoffman Kiln".
The most unique feature is that the interior can be divided so that while the one side is loading freshly produced red bricks, the other side can be filled with raw bricks ready for firing, raising the production rate.
The kiln has two levels, the outer wall of the first level has 20 kiln gates. Beneath the kiln chamber there is a smoke funnel, all the fumes produced while firing the bricks collects in this underground funnel to the main funnel, and is then released through the chimney next to the kiln. So all you need to do is look up and look for a big chimney, once you see it you will be able to find Funan Brick Kiln easily!
Although the Funan Brick Kiln is no longer producing bricks, in the grounds beautiful red brick buildings and art can still be seen. The "Kiln House" converted from the kilns is a favorite among visitors. The rooms are simple and tidy, giving one a sense of rustic hominess and
are unique accommodation choices. Director Hsu Chenlong has also set up an organic vegetable garden on the grounds to
supply visitors with healthy and delicious local vegetables.
